The Thursday Pause

The Simplicity Trap

Heyyy there, Remori People! 👋

So I've been thinking about why my attempts at simplicity keep failing.

I'll get all excited, delete a bunch of apps, organize my workspace, build my second brain, and cancel some commitments.

For about a week, it feels amazing.

Then life creeps back in. Colleagues start asking why I'm not responding instantly. I make "just this once" exceptions that multiply like rabbits. Before I know it, I'm back to juggling seventeen things at once.

Sound familiar?

Here's what I've realized: simplicity isn't something you achieve and then maintain through willpower. It's something you have to design into your life so it becomes easier than complexity.

Like making it physically harder to check social media than to read a book. Or having a friend who calls you out when you're overcomplicating things.

Here are three tiny integration tricks that actually stick:

1️⃣ The Simplicity Stone

Try this: Find a small object—a stone, coin, or paperclip—and put it somewhere you make decisions. Before saying yes to anything new, pick it up and ask: "Does this add to my life or just add to my list?"

The physical act creates a pause between impulse and commitment. Plus, stones don't need charging.

2️⃣ The Sunday Subtraction

Try this: Set a recurring calendar reminder every Sunday evening with one question: "What can I remove this week to create more space?"

It could be as simple as unsubscribing from one newsletter, deleting one app, or canceling one recurring meeting that has outlived its purpose. Small weekly subtractions compound into significant space.

3️⃣ The Complexity Buddy

Try this: Find someone who cares about your well-being and make a pact. When either of you is about to take on too much, you check in with the other person first.

Sometimes we need outside eyes to see when we're already juggling flaming torches before picking up another one.

"Life is black and white; Remori adds the color."

Ready to design a life where simplicity happens naturally instead of through constant effort?

P.S. What's one "just this once" exception that's become a permanent complication in your life? Mine was checking email "quickly" before bed. 📱💤
