The Thursday Pause

Rethinking purpose

Heyyy there, Remori People,

Fun times! This week, I've been working with aspiring student entrepreneurs, and something caught my attention. Instead of the usual "how do I make money fast?" conversations, we ended up exploring a fundamentally different question: "How can I build something that genuinely helps people?"

Here's the thing the ancients knew that we've somehow forgotten: when you make your work about serving others, you never lack for meaningful work. The Stoics called this sympatheia—the idea that we're all interconnected, that helping others ultimately helps ourselves.

These students weren't chasing profits. They were chasing purpose. And in doing so, they stumbled onto one of the oldest business truths there is.

The shift is everything. It got me thinking: how often do we approach not just business, but life itself, from the wrong starting point?

Three Pause Moments:

1️⃣ The Service-First Question

Try this: Before your next meeting, phone call, or conversation, pause and ask: "How can I be genuinely useful here?" This isn't about being nice—it's about clarity. When you know your purpose in any interaction, everything else becomes simpler.

The question transforms you from someone seeking to someone serving. That changes the entire dynamic.

2️⃣ The Value Audit

Try this: Look at your current work or projects. Strip away the job titles, the industry jargon, the complexity. What are you actually creating for other human beings? If the answer isn't immediately clear, that clarity gap is the real work.

Marcus Aurelius wrote: "What we do now echoes in eternity." Most of what we do echoes nowhere because we never asked if it mattered.

3️⃣ The Obstacle as Teacher

Try this: In your next conversation, completely forget about what you might gain. Focus entirely on understanding what the other person actually needs. Listen for the real challenge hiding behind their words. Ask one question that proves you're genuinely curious about their struggle.

Here's what's counterintuitive: when you stop trying to get something from people, you often get everything you actually needed.

P.S. What's the most meaningful help you've ever received from someone? Sometimes, remembering how it felt to be truly served reminds us how to serve others.
